Nagorno-Karabakh separatist govt confirms loss of key city

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) - On Monday, the spokesperson of the separatist Nagorno Karabakh Government President stated that the Azerbaijani forces took possession of a strategically significant town and claimed that they are targeting the capital of the country.

The declaration by Vagram Pogosian on Facebook came one day after President Ilham Aliyev said that Shushi had been taken by his country's soldiers.

In Azerbaijan's battle for territories, the capture has been the key military development but since 1994 it has been dominated by Armenian ethnic powers, assisted by Armenia.

The positioning of Shushi over the Stepanakert Regional Center, approx. 10 kilometers to the north, provides everyone with a strategic advantage.

Stepanakert and Armenia are both near the main road.

As the people of Nagorno-Karabakh flee the fighting to Armenia, long queues have blocked the route.
