Andino Suns concert in Regina to benefit expected refugees

The band Andino Suns is set to hold a benefit concert Friday night to raise funds for refugees expected to arrive in the days ahead in Regina.

Proceeds of the show, which starts at 8 p.m. CST at the Artesian on 13th Avenue, will be donated to the Regina Open Door Society, which helps settle newly arrived families.

Andy Davalos, lead singer of Andino Suns, said his own family went through a resettlement experience when they fled Chile in the 1970s, due to the political situation in that country. His parents arrived in Canada in 1975. He was born in 1976.

Davalos said he appreciates what it would be like to start a new life in a new country, considering the "crazy circumstance of where you are from."

He said his family's first winter, in Moose Jaw, was difficult yet people helped them with clothing & many other forms of support.

The concert event will include a silent auction & a winter clothing drive.

This event is organized by the Regina Public Interest Research Group, in collaboration with URPride & the U of R Women's Centre.
