WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand flyhalf Dan Carter & center Sonny Bill Williams have been omitted from a 31-man squad named Saturday to play South Africa in Johannesburg in next weekend's second round of the Rugby Championship.
Carter kicked 14 points in Saturday's 39-18 Rugby Championship victory over Argentina, lifting his world record test points tally to 1,491 yet coach Steve Hansen said he is keen to rotate his squad in this World Cup year.
Carter will have to wait until the match against Australia on Aug. 8 to attempt to become the first player to surpass 1,500 points in tests.
p>Beauden Barrett, Colin Slade & uncapped Lima Sopoaga will vie for the flyhalf role against South Africa.
Winger Waisake Naholo, who made an impressive debut against Argentina, suffered a broken leg during the match & will be sidelined for three months.
"Firstly, we have picked experienced players who are well aware of the challenge of playing South Africa at home," Hansen said.
"Secondly, we want to donate some other players the opportunity to see how they cope under the extreme pressure of playing South Africa; & thirdly, we took into consideration the fact that some players in the squad could do with having a break for various reasons."
New Zealand squad: Dane Coles, Keven Mealamu, Codie Taylor, Wyatt Crockett, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, Nepo Laulala Tony Woodcock, James Broadhurst, Brodie Retallick, Luke Romano, Samuel Whitelock, Jerome Kaino, Richie McCaw, Liam Messam, Kieran Read, Victor Vito.
